OCTOBER 10: HAPPY BIRTHDAY BENJAMIN WEST!
If he were alive today, there would be 274 candles on the famous painter’s cake. Born in 1738, the American artist’s renowned works ‘come to define the British Empire.’ The peek of his career coincided with the French and Indian War, during which time he created one of the most famous battle-scene paintings, The Death of General Wolfe (1776). He lived and worked in both the United States as well as England, where he died in 1820 at the age of 81.
The William L. Clements Library at U of M owns one version of this famous masterpiece, which is currently on display at UMMA as part of the exhibition Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of an Empire (on view through January 13).
